Yesterday, several journalism students traveled to Norfolk for the Class C State Journalism Awards Ceremony. Lawrence- Nelson qualified and placed in the top 8 schools for the Yearbook Theme Development category. This was for their work in last year's yearbook, "Building for our Future." The students and Mrs. Haba were anxious and excited to see so many places being called up while they were still waiting. As second place was called, the group lost it in excitement... as they had placed first again for the second year in a row. Sophomores Tiffany Gonzalez-Gamez, Riley Haba, Natalia Wehrman, Paige Huston, Kynnedy Beale, and Epiphanae Lowery (not in attendance) brought home another gold medal for the L-N Journalism Staff. We are so excited to see all of their hard work recognized!

Awards Banquet 5-2

Some good, friendly competition (or maybe at times even not so friendly) is sometimes just what a person needs. That's what the Pizza, Puzzle and Pop provided tonight for the high school students. AND THE WINNER IS: The team of Cassidy Huston, Vali Koehler and Sawyer Cox came in first putting the 400 piece puzzle together, eating a large pizza and finishing 3 pops each with a time of 1 hour, 24 minutes and 24 seconds Coming in a close second was Bayleigh Bohlen, Josie Hajny and Kara Menke, with a time of 1 hour, 25 minutes and 10 seconds. It was such a good group of students who made the evening a lot of fun!!

The Nebraska Department of Education (NDE) and Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) are coordinating to provide $120 in grocery purchasing cards to households of children who receive Free or Reduced-price meals at schools that participate in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs. These cards should be used during summer break when school is not in session. If your student receives Free or Reduced-price meals in SY2024-25 and eats breakfast and/or lunch at school, you do not need to take any action to receive SEBT. Students at Lawrence-Nelson that are directly certified for Free or Reduced meals through SNAP and Medicaid will have cards issued on April 23rd and should receive those about five days later. Students at Lawrence-Nelson that are approved for Free or Reduced through other methods within the school will have cards issued on May 15th and should receive those about five days later. If your student does not currently qualify for Free or Reduced-price meals but your household situation and income changes during summer break and you believe your child becomes eligible, please complete the SEBT application available from the NDE website. If you have questions about your student receiving an SEBT card, please contact Amy Schroer at 402-756-7013. If you have questions about the status of your card, need support for activating your card, or need to update your mailing address, please contact Nebraska DHHS at 800- 383-4278 or DHHS.SEBT@nebraska.gov. Be prepared to provide your first and last name, first and last name of qualifying students, date of birth of qualifying student, and mailing address.
